Apple unveils iPad-designed Christmas trees lighting up Battersea Power Station

This Christmas season, 24 winning public submissions from Apple’s Your Tree on Battersea competition will light up the iconic wash towers at Battersea Power Station.

This Christmas season, Apple celebrates the winners of Your Tree on Battersea, its public creativity on iPad competition, hosted by British comedian and personality Munya Chawawa. Beginning today, from 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. every day until 24 December, the 24 winning submissions will be projected onto Battersea Power Station, alongside trees drawn by established artists and notable figures such as Kylie Minogue, Sir Stephen Fry, Maro Itoje, Oliver Jeffers, David Shrigley OBE, and Chawawa.

“Hosting Apple’s first-ever iPad Christmas tree competition is a full-circle moment for me,” said Chawawa. “As a kid, I spent every weekend going into the store and filling up an iPad with photos of my forehead, so to now be leading Your Tree on Battersea is very special. I love that we’re assembling the nation to create Christmas trees on iPad and lighting them up across the greatest city in the world.”

“I’m so excited to be selected in this competition,” said Varsha Simha, who hails from Canterbury. “I was inspired by the sweaters, stockings, and all the warm things at the Christmas market in the coldest of months. I started by drawing fuzzy little minions and went on to add warm highlights, Christmas hats, and glowing stars. I haven’t celebrated Christmas as part of my culture before, but the idea of gifts, lights, and snow excited me. This competition was a way for me to be part of the festive atmosphere.”

“I’m so happy to be selected,” said Miah D.B., a 7-year-old winner. “I made this tree on iPad because I love drawing on my iPad, and I was inspired by emotions.”

Your Tree on Battersea represents the first time the public has been invited to submit their own designs as part of Apple’s annual celebration of festive creativity.

This competition carries on Apple’s tradition of celebrating festive creativity, and is the first time the company has opened the opportunity to the public. In 2023, artist David Hockney created Bigger Christmas Trees on iPad Pro, and last year, Aardman — creator of Wallace & Gromit — used iPhone 16 Pro Max to create a short animation. Both installations transformed the iconic 101-metre-high chimneys and wash towers that soar above the River Thames.

Apple supports more than 550,000 jobs in the UK and inaugurated its UK headquarters at London’s Battersea Power Station in 2023. The 500,000-square-foot, six-story building runs on 100 percent renewable energy, and has been designed around collaboration, inclusivity, wellness, and sustainability. In addition to Battersea Power Station, Apple also has offices at Bishopsgate in the City of London, Cambridge, St. Albans, and Swindon, alongside 39 Apple Store locations across the UK.

A Leap Forward in Performance with M5

M5 provides an even faster, smoother, and more responsive experience for Apple Vision Pro users, while introducing new opportunities for developers to create more advanced spatial and immersive experiences. Built using third-generation 3-nanometer technology, M5 on Vision Pro features an advanced 10-core CPU that delivers higher multithreaded performance, resulting in faster experiences throughout the system, including faster load times for apps and widgets and more responsive web browsing. The next-generation 10-core GPU architecture brings support for hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading, enabling developers to add remarkable detail to lighting, shadows, and reflections in games like Control.

Apple Intelligence powers a wide range of new experiences integrated across the system, like Live Translation, visual intelligence for onscreen content, intelligent actions in Shortcuts, and more

Today, users can access new Apple Intelligence features that elevate the experience across devices.

Apple today released new Apple Intelligence features that elevate the user experience across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro. Deeply integrated across operating systems, today’s new features help users seamlessly communicate across languages with Live Translation; use visual intelligence to learn more about the onscreen content across their apps;1 and express themselves with enhancements to Genmoji and Image Playground.2 Additionally, Shortcuts can now tap into Apple Intelligence models directly to accelerate workflows, and developers are starting to take advantage of the on-device foundational model at the core of Apple Intelligence to build intelligent, privacy-protected features into their apps.

Users with an Apple Intelligence-enabled device can start experiencing new features today with iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, watchOS 26, and visionOS 26. Additionally, Apple Intelligence features will be coming soon to eight more languages: Danish, Dutch, Norwegian, Portuguese (Portugal), Swedish, Turkish, Chinese (traditional), and Vietnamese.

Break Down Language Barriers with Live Translation

For those moments when a language barrier gets in the way, Live Translation can help users communicate across select languages when messaging or speaking. The feature is seamlessly integrated into Messages, FaceTime, and Phone, and users can also access it with AirPods Pro 3 to translate in-person conversations, enabled by Apple Intelligence on iPhone.3

With this powerful new feature, users can translate all types of conversations — whether over the phone or while using FaceTime, in person, or asynchronously in Messages — right when they need to. It protects user’s privacy with on-device processing, so personal conversations stay personal.

In Messages, Live Translation can automatically translate a user’s response as they type and deliver it in the recipient’s language.4 During FaceTime calls, users can follow along with live translated captions while still hearing their friend or family member’s voice. And during a phone call, the translation is spoken out loud in real time.5 Users can access Live Translation on AirPods with an all-new gesture by simultaneously pressing both AirPods stems; by saying “Siri, start Live Translation;” or even from the Action button on iPhone, which will allow them to hear in their preferred language. Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) lowers the volume of the person speaking so it’s easier to focus on the translation.

And by the end of the year, Live Translation for Phone, FaceTime, and AirPods will expand language support to include Italian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese (Mandarin, simplified), and Chinese (Mandarin, traditional).

Search and Take Action with Updates to Visual Intelligence

Visual intelligence, which builds on Apple Intelligence, now helps users learn and do more with the content on their iPhone screen. It makes it faster than ever for users to search, take action, and answer questions about the content they’re viewing across their apps.

Users can search for the content on their iPhone screen to find similar images across Google, as well as apps that integrate this experience, such as eBay, Poshmark, Etsy, and more. If there’s an object a user is interested in learning about, like a pair of shoes, they can simply press the same buttons used to take a screenshot and highlight it to search for that specific item or similar objects online. And with ChatGPT, users can ask questions about anything they’re viewing onscreen.

Updates to visual intelligence help users learn and do more with the content on their iPhone screen.

Visual intelligence enables users to summarize and translate text, as well as add an event from a flyer on their iPhone screen to their calendar, with a single tap.6

Users can also take advantage of these capabilities by using visual intelligence with their iPhone camera through Camera Control, the Action button, and in Control Center.

Create Unique Images with Enhancements to Genmoji and Image Playground

Users can now mix together emoji and combine them with descriptions to create a brand-new Genmoji. And when making Genmoji or Image Playground images inspired by family and friends, users can change expressions or modify personal attributes like hairstyle to match their contact’s latest look.

In Image Playground, users can tap into ChatGPT to explore new styles Iike Watercolor and Oil Painting, along with an Any Style option that offers even more creative control. Image Playground sends a user’s description or photo to ChatGPT, which creates a unique image.

Users can now mix together emoji and combine them with descriptions to create a brand-new Genmoji.

Get Personalized Fitness Insights with Workout Buddy

Workout Buddy is a first-of-its-kind fitness experience powered by Apple Intelligence that analyzes a user’s workout data and fitness history to deliver personalized, spoken motivation throughout their session, based on data like heart rate, pace, distance, Activity rings, personal fitness milestones, and more. To offer meaningful inspiration in real time, Workout Buddy analyzes data privately and securely, with Apple Intelligence. A new text-to-speech model then translates insights into a dynamic generative voice built using voice data from Fitness+ trainers, so it has the right energy, style, and tone for a workout.

Workout Buddy will be available starting in English across some of the most popular workout types, and is available on Apple Watch with Bluetooth headphones, with an Apple Intelligence-supported iPhone nearby.7

AirPods and iPhone users also have access to Workout Buddy, so their workout data and fitness history can be used to generate personalized, motivational insights during their session.8

Build Intelligent Shortcuts

Shortcuts help users accomplish more faster, by combining multiple steps from their favorite apps into powerful, personal automations. And now with Apple Intelligence, users can take advantage of intelligent actions in the Shortcuts app to create automations, like summarizing text with Writing Tools or creating images with Image Playground.

Users can tap into Apple Intelligence models, either on device or with Private Cloud Compute to generate responses that feed into the rest of their shortcut, maintaining the privacy of information used in the shortcut. For example, users can create powerful Shortcuts like comparing an audio transcription to typed notes, summarizing documents by their contents, extracting information from a PDF and adding key details to a spreadsheet, and more.

With Apple Intelligence, Shortcuts users can take advantage of intelligent actions to create all-new automations.

Experience Apple Intelligence Within Third-Party Apps

Apple opened up access for any developer to tap into the on-device large language model at the core of Apple Intelligence, and many apps have already introduced new experiences for their users. For example, Streaks now intelligently suggests and automatically categorizes tasks in a user’s to-do list; CARROT Weather provides free, unlimited conversation around weather insights, all in the app’s signature tone; and Detail: AI Video Editor helps creatives by generating teleprompter scripts from outlines or existing text.

These experiences are available offline and protect user privacy, using AI inference that is free of cost to developers. The framework is tightly integrated into Swift and leverages capabilities like guided generation to seamlessly incorporate the model’s output into a developer’s app.

Even More Capabilities Across Apps Users Rely On Every Day

The most relevant actions in an email, website, note, or other content can be identified and automatically categorized in Reminders.

Apple Wallet can identify and summarize order tracking details from emails sent from merchants or delivery carriers. This works across all of a user’s orders, giving them the ability to see their full order details, progress notifications, and more, all in one place.

Users can create a poll for anything in Messages, and with Apple Intelligence, Messages can detect when a poll might come in handy and suggest one. In addition, Backgrounds in the Messages app lets a user personalize their chats with stunning designs, and they can create unique backgrounds that fit their conversation with Image Playground.

An Extraordinary Step Forward for Privacy in AI

Designed to protect users’ privacy at every step, many Apple Intelligence models run entirely on device. For more complex requests, Private Cloud Compute extends the privacy and security of iPhone into the cloud to unlock even more intelligence so a user’s data is never stored or shared with Apple; it is used only to fulfill their request. Independent experts can inspect the code that runs on Apple silicon servers to continuously verify this privacy promise, and are already doing so. This is a breakthrough for privacy in AI.

Apple expands tools to help parents protect kids and teens online

Apple is offering more ways to help parents ensure their kids and teens have age-appropriate experiences from the moment they set up their device, with new tools that build on the parental controls already available in Screen Time and on the App Store.

Continuing its commitment to creating technology that enriches users’ lives while helping them stay safe online and protect their privacy, Apple today shared an update on new ways to help parents protect kids and teens online when using Apple products, including previously previewed features. With the release of iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, watchOS 26, visionOS 26, and tvOS 26 this fall, parents have more ways to ensure kids have age-appropriate experiences from the moment they set up their device. These new tools build on the parental controls already available in Screen Time and on the App Store, and are designed to help parents navigate the risks of an increasingly complex digital world. Like all Apple features, they are built with privacy and security at the core.”

Managing Child Accounts Becomes Simpler

For years, Apple has supported Child Accounts, which are Apple Accounts that must be associated with a parent or guardian account in a Family Sharing group. A Child Account is required for children under 131 and available for children up to 18, to help parents ensure their kids have age-appropriate experiences.

Apple recently streamlined the setup process for Child Accounts and accessing built-in parental controls. If parents prefer to finish setting up their kid’s account at a later time, child-appropriate default settings will still be enabled on the device. This helps assure parents that child safety settings will be active from the time their child begins using a device. These features are already available with iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, and macOS Sequoia 15.4.

Now parents have a way to more easily ensure the age associated with their kid’s account was set up correctly. Once they have done so, parents of kids under 13 will be prompted to connect their child’s account to their Family group. The account will be converted to a Child Account, and parents will be able to access Apple’s wide set of parental control options, with default age-appropriate settings applied.

Parents will have the ability to share their child’s age range with the apps they use while protecting their child’s privacy.

App developers can request the age range associated with a Child Account through the new Declared Age Range API, which will help developers provide age-appropriate experiences for their users.

Sharing a Kid’s Age Range with Apps

Parents will now have the ability to share their child’s age range with the apps they use while protecting their child’s privacy. Through this new feature, parents can allow their kids to share the age range associated with the Child Account with app developers in a way that does not reveal the child’s birth date and keeps them in control of their data. App developers will be able to request this information through the new Declared Age Range API, which will help them to provide age-appropriate experiences for their users. Parents can choose if they would like age-range information to be shared always, for each app request, or never, and can change their selection at any time. By default, children are not allowed to change how their age ranges are shared. Parents can allow them to make changes in Content & Privacy Restrictions settings.

Importantly, with this update, families can have age-appropriate experiences within apps without the App Store collecting unnecessary sensitive personal data on every user, even those who simply want to download apps that provide weather updates or sports scores.

Protections Enabled from the Beginning for Teens

Apple requires that children under 13 have a Child Account, which comes with protections like web content filters and app restrictions enabled from the beginning.

Now, kids ages 13 to 17 will have similar age-appropriate protections enabled from the beginning, regardless of whether their account was set up as a Child Account or a standard Apple Account. These additional protections include web content filters and Communication Safety, and make use of the newly introduced more granular age ratings on the App Store.

More Granular Age Ratings on the App Store

Apple has long provided age ratings for each app on the App Store, based on information provided by developers, that help users make informed decisions about how appropriate that app may be for kids. These age ratings are integrated across Apple’s operating systems and work with parental control features like Screen Time and Ask to Buy.

By the end of the year, age ratings will be expanded to five categories, with three ratings to support adolescents: 13+, 16+, and 18+. This will give users a more granular understanding of an app’s appropriateness, and developers a more precise way to rate their apps.

Additional Improvements for Families

Apple is also making improvements across the App Store, Communication Safety, and Screen Time:

App Store product pages will reflect when developers indicate that their apps contain user-generated content, messaging, or advertising capabilities, and if they include any in-app content controls like parental controls or age assurance.

When app content restrictions are set for a child, apps with age ratings that exceed the restrictions will not appear on the App Store in places like the Today, Games, and Apps tabs, or in editorial stories.

When Ask to Buy is enabled for the App Store, parents can now grant an exception for their child to download an app with an age rating that exceeds the app content restriction set. Using Screen Time on iPhone or iPad, they can also revoke permission at any time, and the child will no longer be able to use the app.

Communication Safety expands to intervene when nudity is detected in FaceTime video calls, and to blur out nudity in Shared Albums in Photos.

Existing Tools to Help Enhance Child Safety While Safeguarding Privacy

The new features mentioned above build on trusted tools already available to help parents protect their kids:

Age ratings, content restrictions, and filters provide information about the age-appropriateness of apps.

Ask to Buy helps parents approve or decline their kid’s downloads or in-app purchases from the App Store.

Find My helps parents easily locate kids in their Family Sharing group.

Communication Safety warns kids when receiving or sending images and videos containing nudity, and allows them to get help.

Made for Kids gives parents a section of the App Store with age-appropriate apps held to even higher standards for privacy and safety.

Limits on Apple Ads prevent ads from being served to kids under 13, and personalized ads from being served to kids over 13.

Disallowing ad tracking requires developers not to track kids’ activity, or even ask to do so.

Data Access Request Controls help parents decide if their kids can share sensitive information, like their location.

User Support Tools help users report safety concerns with third-party apps to Apple.

The ScreenTime Framework, which gives developers the tools they need to help parents and guardians supervise their children’s web usage on their app, as applicable.

Custom parental control experience frameworks such as Device Activity, Managed Settings, and Family Controls, which enable apps to create custom experiences that help parents manage screen time.

The SensitiveContentAnalysis framework, which helps apps check for and blur nudity.

Media Ratings, which allow developers to incorporate parents’ limits on movie or TV ratings into their apps.
